Questions

Before you mail

What's an original hem?

We remove fabric from above the hem and reattach the factory edge, so the original stitching, fade and wear stay exactly where they were. It's the right call for dark denim, selvedge, and any jeans with contrast thread. A regular hem cuts at the bottom and re-stitches with matching thread — cleaner for chinos, dress pants and heavy alterations.

How much can you take off?

Up to about 5 inches with a regular hem. With an original hem we can go about 3 inches before the seam starts to bunch; past that we'll email you and recommend a regular hem instead, at the lower $35 price.

What if I measured wrong?

Email us before your box arrives and we'll use the new number. Once we've cut, we can only add length back within the seam allowance — so measure twice.

Can I send more than one pair?

Yes. Shipping is one flat charge for the box, and each pair is priced by the hem you pick. Everything in the box gets the same measurement, so send pairs you want the same length.

What can't you hem by mail?

Leather, suede, heavily beaded hems, and anything with a lining we'd need to rebuild. Email a photo first and we'll tell you straight.

Who actually does the work?

Aventura Tailors, a family-owned shop in North Miami Beach that has been altering clothes for South Florida for years. Hem by Mail is how we reach everyone who isn't close enough to walk in.
